“Make me feel valued”

When we recently stayed at Microtel Inn & Suites in Appleton, we wound up in a room with a broken air conditioner. We awoke at 3:30 a.m. to a warm, stuffy room, and the AC sounded like a dying buffalo! My husband called down to the front desk right away and asked for a maintenance person, or, to be switched to another room. The gal at the desk indicated the maintenance man was not onsite and could not be called in, and, that the hotel was full so she could not switch us. She suggested opening the window, which we had tried, but there was no screen. She also indicated that since we had booked through Expedia, she could not refund our money; we would have to do that through them. Since we had booked, and paid for, a second night, and the hotel was full, we were concerned that we wouldn't get our money back. And we weren't going to stay another night in the hot box. The next morning we went down to find another person at the front desk. He was equally unhelpful saying his manager wouldn't be in until later in the afternoon. He wasn't in a position to call in an HVAC person to look at it either. I called Expedia and they gave me some resistance saying their cancellation policy was strict on this reservation. No refunds. I insisted I wasn't getting what I paid for. We left our number with the front desk for the manager to call while we were out. No one ever called but when we returned early that afternoon we were put in another room that was perfect. My biggest complaint is the way we were treated; desk clerks should make you feel like you will be taken care of; even if they can't authorize refunds or maintenance calls, they should be authorized to treat you well and assure you that they'll do right by the customer. We never received an apology or credit.
