I booked the Microtel in Gallup without looking at reviews beforehand because I had never had a bad experience with a Microtel before. There's a first time for everything! Boy was this horrible. The rate I booked at was $55.95, but when I pulled up to the hotel there was a large sign advertising $42.95. I asked about the difference, and she mumbled something about the discount already being put into my bill and how that was for a room with one king bed, whereas I had two queen beds because those were the only rooms left. I requested a room on the second floor. Frankly, I think they just change the details for why you can't get the cheaper rate based on whatever room you're taking-- "Oh, it's the second floor not the first," and so on and so forth. Whatever money is being made off of this scheme strikes me as probably not worth the bad press. Here's the bad press: what a low-down dirty scam, to charge people who booked in advance an additional 25% of the cost of the room because they are now locked in and cannot change their minds. The first room I got adjoined a room where someone was watching television. It was so loud that I thought they were watching in the room with me-- through the adjoining door the sound was just so loud. I asked to switch to another room. The other room faced the train tracks-- which did not bother me, but which most people I guess avoid because of the noise-- but the tiles in the bathroom were totally cracked and when you walked on them you could hear them cracking further. They had become totally unanchored from the floor. Someone is going to cut themselves-- really. I put down all the natty towels there were just to make sure that in the middle of the night I didn't stub my toe on some ceramic shard. I think enough has been written about the breakfast. Needless to say I don't think that this hotel has the right to stay in business without making some basic improvements, like how much effort could it possibly take to retile the floor? Where are the priorities here? Hotel owners in other towns in the same area seem to charge the same amount and make improvements at the same time, why can't you? Stained, old mirrors with black splotches; carpets redone which don't match the carpeted sideboard-- what could you possibly have been thinking? Except maybe that you could make miniscule improvements, reap the most profit out of the property as necessary, then burn the whole thing for insurance. I don't see another business model.
