“Freaky Decor”

  , Houston
I pulled in off the highway and chose this motel based on looks, price and location. The physical location is great, if not a little tricky to find. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants in the area, but the motel itself is tucked behind the Costco, down a long and winding road. The exterior looks great--You'd think it was brand new--But upon entering the facility you will find it's your standard roadside fare: musty smell, outdated decor, and worn around the edges. The front desk clerk couldn't have been nicer and gave me the quiet room I requested. It's the room itself that freaked me out. One wall is all mirrors, and there's a big mirror on the opposite wall. There are no lamps in the room, only the weird florescent lights concealed above the mirrors. They did provide good lighting for reading, though, as if many people who check into the mirrored room do much reading. A cool feature was a small upholstered window seat. It was a nice place to perch and contemplate the eerie series of giant illuminated crosses glowing in the window. (You will either be comforted to know Jesus is watching or slightly ashamed to be doing whatever it is you're doing in a mirrored motel room off the highway outside Memphis, Tennessee.) Freakiest of all was the dead roach that dropped out of my neatly folded washcloth in the bathroom. I live in Texas and I've seen a lot of roaches in my day, but never one folded inside a washcloth. That gave me a major case of the heebie-jeebies, but I did manage to sleep tolerably well. The bed was comfy and the room was quiet. (Pillows were rather mushy for my liking, though.) Nice-smelling toiletries in the bath, too, if you can get over the roach(es). Nobody broke into my rental truck either, which was definitely a plus.
