“Waking up disgusted”

After an 8 hour drive in bad weather I was happy to find a hotel that looked new on the outside and I have to admit at $79.00 the price was reasonable. The clerk was efficient - I went through the check in process quickly - needing only a single bed and a good night's sleep I really didn't think I was too picky. For some reason I was given a handicap room, wasn't thrilled about it but didn't give it a lot of thought until I turned on the shower without looking at the nozzle - drenching the entire bathroom because it was a pull out that had been placed in an unfortunate spot. Since the bathroom was only supplied with one towel - one washcloth and one hand towel - it was a bit difficult to get the water off the floor and had to go back to the lobby to get extra towels. Still no big deal - took an uncomfortable shower then tried to go to sleep. The pillows were flat - the television was fuzzy and I couldn't get the air control unit to work properly, it was noisy and either too hot or too cold. Kind of tossed and turned all night. Probably a good time to mention I really hadn't taken a good look at the room. When daylight finally came I was able to really get a good look at the room. After dropping an earring, and having to crawl around the carpet to search for it - I was disgusted..the carpet was filthy. But I believe the deciding factor for the 1 on cleanliness came after I pulled out the chair that went to the desk and found the seat covered with something that I hope was chocolate and not blood - but I swear it looked like someone's overnight pad didn't live up to it's promise. At checkout - which by the way was stated many times as 11:50 AM instead of the very clear 12 noon posted on the interior door - I did make a complaint at the desk. Instead of apologizing the person behind the desk made a big production of telling me how they took that particular room apart on the previous Thursday (This was a Saturday) and gave it a deep cleaning. HA! There is no way that room has seen a deep cleaning for the entire winter season. The person could have apologized for not only the lack of cleanliness, but also for placing me in a handicap room in the first place. And yes - there were many vacant rooms when I checked in. In the future I will pay significantly more and drive another 10 miles to prevent staying at a Microtel. If you are ever in Princeton and it's the only motel or hotel with a vacancy - keep driving until you hit the next town.
