“Creatures in the Night”

The woman who checked us in was very polite and friendly, so I was optimistic about a good stay. However, things went downhill after getting to the room. First off, the smoke alarm was hanging from the ceiling - wires were still connected, but the device itself was dangling from above. After my husband and I went to bed, he kept getting awakened by noises - first, the top of the ice chest had fallen off, then a cup fell over. He was convinced there was a mouse or rat in the room. I hadn't heard anything, but the last time, we both heard a scuffling sound that freaked us out. Course it was 3 or 4 in the morning at this time, and I wasn't about to change rooms, so we didn't bother notifying the front desk. It was at this time too that I noticed the comforter had red stains on it - perhaps from someone spilling wine??? Quite unnerving. At checkout, I notified the front desk clerk of our disturbed evening. He was quite skeptical, noting that this room gets rented every night. (It was a first floor room.) I don't even think he apologized, just acted surprised. Needless to say, I won't hurry back to this motel.
